Employee No Call – No Show, Now What?

When your employees do not show up for work, it can deal a severe blow to your company. One unplanned absence can set the entire business back. When a worker fails to show up, the following will happen:

  • Another employee will have to take over the absent employee’s work, putting more stress on the present employee.
  • The whole organization will fall behind with work getting done.
  • The absent employee will miss updates crucial to the success of the company.

If you have no proper guidelines regarding no-call and no-show, your workers will take advantage of the situation. Try these strategies.

Institute a Clear-Cut Attendance Policy

Poor attendance leads to decreased productivity, lower morale, and extra costs for running your business. The U.S. Department of Labor cautions that approximately 3% of an employer’s workforce is absent on any given day. When you establish a clear attendance policy, your team will understand what is and what is not acceptable. The team also needs to realize that there are consequences for failure to adhere to the policy. The policy is only effective if you enforce it. All your managers need training on the implications and how to implement them.

Allow Employees to Participate in the Scheduling

Scheduling software indeed takes a load off supervisors when it comes to scheduling. However, it can put pressure on workers to cover on-call shifts on short notice. It is vital that you contemplate how you schedule employees. Provide an easy method for your employees to communicate for and request time off. Allow them to input the hours they work. Be careful with scheduling, or you might have a no-show that is your fault.

Provide Incentives to Stay

A no-call no-show is not a singular event. Most are the result of factors that build over time. If you fail to provide adequate employee training or are unhappy with management, you run a high risk of losing employees. Try to provide for your employees’ personal and professional growth, and you will decrease the chances of your employees leaving. Also, please get to know your employees, because the better you know them, the more you can meet their needs.

Guarantee Employee Safety

Negligence or job dissatisfaction is not the only reason for no-calls and no-shows. It might be a health issue, or maybe the employee does not feel safe. Try to contact the employee and try to help them if possible. Doing this can also lead to constructive dialogue.

Keep Accurate Documentation

It is crucial to have an attendance policy that allows you to ask for a doctor’s note. Having this option allows you flexibility in verifying the truth of an employee’s excuse for a no-call or no-show. Of course, you have the responsibility of documenting your employee’s discipline as well. This documentation is essential in case the employee disputes your record of their performance.
