What is Seasonal Hiring?

Hiring during the peak holiday season is very common. During the peak holiday season like Christmas and New Year when the demand goes up many companies hire temporary or contract-based employees to meet the demands and assure fulfillment to keep their customers satisfied. Although seasonal hiring is the solution for these demands they do come with its pros and cons.

The Pros of Seasonal Hiring

Cost-Saving Solution

Hiring seasonal staff is also a cost-effective solution for organizations because usually, the organization does not have to give these employees all the benefits and perks that they provide their regular staff. The organization can earn extra without spending as much on temporary employees. This lets organizations allocate costs and resources more efficiently, especially for industries where demands and sales keep on changing depending on the market.

Easier Talent Acquisition

Seasonal hiring lets companies hire a wide variety of talent. A lot of people like students who are on break or individuals who need some temporary work usually apply for such seasonal work. This helps the organization get a wide variety of employees with different talents and skills and lets them fill the positions more quickly and efficiently.

Boosts Employee Morale

The regular staff is usually under a lot of pressure during the peak season because of all the extra workloads. Hiring some seasonal employees helps to reduce their stress and boost morale. Moreover, new employees bring positive energy and more help which increases the morale of the employees and has a positive energy in the workplace. The regular staff can focus on their responsibilities more with extra support from the temporary staff.

Trial Period for Potential Permanent Employees

Seasonal hiring gives an opportunity for the employer to test the new employees and see if they are the right fit for their organization. Many times, seasonal employees can become permanent employees if the organization is looking to hire more people. Employers can also keep the details of the seasonal hire for any future requirements they might need.

Less Intensive Hiring Process

Seasonal hiring is not a very intensive hiring process because the employers and the employees know that this is temporary. When the hiring process is less intensive it is less stressful for the employers and the positions can be filled pretty quickly. It also requires less work for the employers so they can focus on their responsibilities better.

Access to Specialised Skills

With the hiring of seasonal staff, the organization has access to specialized skills. Since the organization needs employees for the peak season, they need people with niche skills so that they can get the job done quickly in keeping with the standard of the organization. This access to specialized skills or talents can also be beneficial for other employees as they can learn these skills which in turn will be beneficial for the organization.

The Cons of Seasonal Hiring

Training and Onboarding Challenges

Since the seasonal staff are hired for peak season work, they need training quickly to become productive and contribute to the extra workload of the organization. This task can be quite challenging if the nature of the work is not that easy. This rapid onboarding and training has to be careful and efficient otherwise the organization may have to deal with inadequacy and errors which can be more harmful to the organization.

High Turnover Rates

The seasonal hires are temporary, and their employment period is usually predetermined. They are temporary but they must be a part of the team to make the work seamless and this can require team-building training. Bringing in new employees for a short period of time can disrupt the team dynamics among the employees. Since the new employees already know that they are hired temporarily they might not play that good of a part in team building and can be disloyal.

Potential Impact on Company Culture

Hiring new employees may impact the company culture because they might not be able to blend in with the regular staff which will adversely impact the company culture. This can create a divide between the old and new staff which will disrupt the flow of the work. Bringing in new employees can also make the old employees a little careless because they are getting more help than on a regular day.

Limited Availability of Specialized Skills

Some industries need people with specialized skills and knowledge and finding those kinds of people for temporary work can be challenging. This limited availability of specialised skills can impact the sales of the business leading them to not meet the demands of their customers and losing some potential customers in the process.

Legal and Compliance Issues

Every organization needs to follow a set of labor laws and regulations and hiring seasonal staff and following all rules and regulations can be a bit of work for some organizations. Laws for overtime and workplace safety must be followed by the management to avoid any future penalties and damage to the reputation of the organization.

Seasonal hiring comes with its pros and cons, and it is up to the organization if they are getting more advantages or disadvantages out of it. Before going through the process of hiring new employees even though they will be temporary it is better to know how your organization is affected by it. If you think that the organization will benefit from seasonal hiring go for it through a trusted staff agency but if you think that the organization will not get many benefits out of it and the resources can also get wasted because of seasonal hiring, it is best not to hire seasonal employees.
